The mortal remains of Nirankari head Baba Hardev Singh, who died in an accident in Canada, were cremated at Nigambodh Ghat here on Wednesday. His family and Nirankari leaders were present at the Ghat when the body was consigned to flames.
The funeral procession started from the Nirankari Mission Ashram at Burari at 9 am. The procession came to Nigambodh Ghat through Mukherjee Nagar, Mall Road and Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Kashmere Gate. It reached the crematorium around 1.40 pm. The procession was accompanied by security vehicles and vehicles of Nirankari leaders who reached the Ghat chanting religious hymns.
People on both sides of the road from ISBT Kashmere Gate to Nigambodh Ghat were waiting since morning to have a last look of the Baba. As soon as the body reached the crematorium, devotees started wailing.
Earlier, thousands of followers joined the funeral procession as it made its way towards the Nigam Bodh crematorium.
Delhi Police had issued a traffic advisory urging commuters to avoid certain roads. Motorists had been advised to take alternative routes, said a Delhi Traffic Police advisory. Traffic is closed from Kingsway Camp to Burari Road due to heavy pedestrian movement.
The 62-year-old Nirankari head was killed in a road accident in Montreal in Canada on May 13. His mortal remains were brought to Delhi on Monday morning. His son-in-law was also killed in the same accident.
His wife Salvinder Kaur has been appointed the head of the sect.
