Uttarkashi, 13th Nov. All 40 workers who were trapped after an under-construction tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi are safe, said officials. Communication has been established with them, they said on Monday.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reached the site to oversee the rescue operations.

Rescuers have been working tirelessly to create an escape passage for the laborers and have provided them with food and water.

The tunnel, which is being built between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway, collapsed on Sunday morning. The trapped laborers come from various states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Efforts are being made to stabilize the falling debris, and shotcrete is being used for this purpose.

Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), are involved in the rescue efforts.

The trapped laborers have been contacted through walkie-talkies and have been provided with food and water.

District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela and Chief Minister Dhami have visited the site to review the rescue efforts and discuss the strategy to save the laborers.

The officials are optimistic about their safety as they have access to enough oxygen through a water pipeline.
