15 Muslim Candidates Win in Lok Sabha Elections, Including TMC’s Yusuf Pathan

At least 15 Muslim candidates emerged victorious in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, marking a significant presence in India’s political landscape. Among the notable winners is Yusuf Pathan, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominee and former Indian cricketer, who secured a decisive victory over Congress stalwart Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Baharampur.

This year, out of 78 Muslim candidates who contested in the elections, a notable decrease from the previous polls which saw 115 candidates, the Muslim community clinched victories across various constituencies.

Imran Masood of the Congress secured the Saharanpur seat with a substantial margin of 64,542 votes, while Iqra Choudhary, a young candidate from the Samajwadi Party, triumphed in Kairana over BJP’s Pradeep Kumar by 69,116 votes. Incumbent MP Afzal Ansari retained the Ghazipur seat with an impressive tally of 5.3 lakh votes, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi secured a landslide victory in Hyderabad with a margin of 3,38,087 votes.

In Ladakh, Mohammad Haneefa, an Independent candidate, emerged victorious with a margin of 27,862 votes, while Abdul Rashid Sheikh, another Independent candidate, clinched the Baramulla seat in Jammu and Kashmir with 4.7 lakh votes.

In Uttar Pradesh, Mohibbullah of the Samajwadi Party secured the Rampur seat with 4,81,503 votes, and Zia Ur Rehman emerged victorious in Sambhal with a margin of 1.2 lakh votes.

Mian Altaf Ahmad of the National Conference triumphed in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat in Jammu and Kashmir, securing 2,81,794 votes, while Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, also of the National Conference, secured 3,56,866 votes in Srinagar.

Yusuf Pathan’s victory in West Bengal’s Baharampur, defeating Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury by 85,022 votes, adds another chapter to the Muslim community’s representation in India’s democratic process.
