Wayanad, 1st August. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called on Home Minister Amit Shah to classify the devastating Wayanad landslides as a “calamity of severe nature” under the MPLADS guidelines. This designation would enable MPs to allocate up to Rs 1 crore from their MPLADS funds for relief efforts in the affected areas.

Tharoor’s letter, dated July 31, highlights the catastrophic impact of the landslides that struck Wayanad district on the night of July 30. The disaster has resulted in over 100 fatalities, numerous severe injuries, and many more people reported missing beneath the rubble.

The Congress leader emphasized the urgency of extending all possible support to Wayanad, stressing that the scale of the disaster demands a coordinated and generous response from all sectors of society. He noted that rescue operations, involving the armed forces, Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force, and other agencies, are ongoing but face significant challenges.

Tharoor’s letter underscores the critical need for immediate financial assistance to bolster relief and rehabilitation efforts. By declaring the landslides a “calamity of severe nature,” MPs would be empowered to contribute significantly to the recovery process, aiding in rescue, relief, and rebuilding efforts.

The death toll in Wayanad continues to rise, with current reports indicating 173 fatalities. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate and assist survivors trapped under the debris. Tharoor hopes that Shah will consider his request favorably to facilitate much-needed support for the affected communities.
