Meitei and Hmar Communities Agree to Restore Normalcy in Jiribam

Imphal, 2nd August.
Representatives of the Meitei and Hmar communities have committed to efforts aimed at restoring normalcy in the violence-affected Jiribam district of Manipur. This agreement was reached during a meeting held at a CRPF facility in neighboring Assam’s Cachar on Thursday.

The discussions were moderated by the Jiribam district administration, Assam Rifles, and CRPF personnel, with representatives from the Thadou, Paite, and Mizo communities also present.

The joint statement issued after the meeting emphasized that both sides will work to prevent further incidents of arson and violence and cooperate fully with security forces in the region. They have agreed to facilitate controlled and coordinated movement in Jiribam, with the next meeting scheduled for August 15.

The violence, which has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands since May last year, initially spared Jiribam but escalated in June following the discovery of a mutilated body of a farmer. This led to widespread arson and forced many to seek refuge in relief camps. The unrest has also resulted in the death of a CRPF jawan due to a militant ambush in mid-July.
