Guwahati, 6th August.
Congress state chief Bhupen Kumar Borah on Monday strongly criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what he termed as indulging in “Hindu-Muslim politics” and promoting a “communal agenda.”

During a press interaction in Guwahati, Borah accused Sarma and the ruling BJP of focusing on divisive politics rather than addressing substantive issues. He argued that the people of Assam are disinterested in the communal rhetoric of the BJP, a sentiment reflected in the recent Lok Sabha election results.

“Sarma engages only in Hindu-Muslim politics. The people of Assam are not at all interested in such a communal agenda,” Borah asserted. His remarks come in response to Sarma’s recent statement about introducing a law for life imprisonment in cases of ‘love jihad’ and measures to protect land rights and government jobs for indigenous people.

Borah criticized Sarma’s approach, saying, “For any land policy, a law should be debated in the assembly. Instead, the CM is making statements to communalize the issue.”

He also took aim at Sarma’s economic policies, claiming they are flawed and overly reliant on beneficiary schemes. “The current government is using media and state resources to promote the CM’s communal ideas. The government’s earnings are increasingly dependent on liquor sales, with 2,000 liquor shop licenses being issued to local leaders in villages,” Borah alleged.

Additionally, Borah announced that the united opposition of 18 parties in Assam has resolved to maintain their alliance until the 2026 assembly elections and will contest every election as a unified bloc in the coming years.

“We will be intensifying our efforts to expose the present government’s failures in the days to come,” Borah concluded.
