Kolhapur, 9th August.
A devastating fire destroyed the Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha, a historic auditorium in Kolhapur, western Maharashtra, on Thursday night. The auditorium, which had been a cultural landmark for over a century, was built by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj in 1915.

District officials reported that the fire, which broke out around 9:45 pm, is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Fire tenders and water tankers were promptly dispatched to the scene in an effort to control the blaze.

Hasan Mushrif, the guardian minister of Kolhapur, visited the site and announced that an inquiry would be conducted. “It is unfortunate that the auditorium, built by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj 109 years ago, was gutted in a fire. No one could have imagined this destruction,” Mushrif said.

The auditorium had recently undergone renovation with a Rs 10 crore grant from the state government.
