Chandigarh, 6th Sept. The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress met on Friday to finalize candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. Sources indicate that the first list of nominees could be released “very soon.” Key figures, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, participated in the meeting.

Out of the 90 Assembly seats in Haryana, candidates for 66 have been cleared by the CEC. However, the Congress has yet to release any official list. A sub-committee, involving prominent members such as Deepak Babaria and Ajay Maken, is still deliberating on candidates for the remaining 24 seats.

Additionally, the Congress is in the midst of seat-sharing negotiations with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the Haryana polls, although talks have faced resistance from certain factions within the party. The Hooda faction, along with other leaders, is reportedly opposed to an alliance with the AAP, citing the party’s limited influence in Haryana.

In a significant political development, Olympians Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined the Congress on Friday. Both athletes were key figures in the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They pledged to remain fearless and steadfast in their new political roles.

Haryana’s 90-member Assembly is set to go to the polls on October 5, with vote counting scheduled for October 8.
