AAP Slams ‘One Nation, One Election’ as BJP’s “Jumla”

New Delhi, 18th Sept. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday slammed the BJP-led Centre’s approval of the ‘one nation, one election’ proposal, calling it a “jumla” and claiming it is impractical.

The Union Cabinet approved the proposal on Wednesday, following recommendations from the high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee submitted its report in March, prior to the Lok Sabha elections.

AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak condemned the proposal, questioning its feasibility and accusing the BJP of repeating past failures. “If a government falls within two-and-a-half years, does the BJP intend to rule that state through an LG or Governor? This is BJP’s jumla, similar to their handling of farm legislation and demonetization,” Pathak told PTI-Videos.

Pathak highlighted the BJP’s inability to conduct simultaneous elections in four states and questioned their capability to implement nationwide elections. “They struggled with simultaneous elections in just four states and are currently managing Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir polls together. How can they handle one nation, one election for the entire country?” he argued.

He also raised concerns about the impact on smaller political parties, stating, “There are over 3,000 small political outfits in the country. Holding elections together might benefit larger parties but will disadvantage smaller ones.”

Pathak criticized the proposal as unrealistic, stating that it fails to account for the complexities involved in conducting elections at such a large scale.
