New Delhi, 18th Sept.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan, a major initiative aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.

With a total outlay of ₹79,156 crore—comprising ₹56,333 crore from the central government and ₹22,823 crore from state governments—the mission will target over 63,000 tribal-majority and tribal villages in aspirational districts across 30 states and UTs.
The scheme, set to benefit more than 5 crore tribal people, will cover 549 districts and 2,740 blocks. It aims to address critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, and livelihoods through various government schemes. The mission will involve 17 ministries, implementing 25 interventions, and will be monitored through the PM Gati Shakti Portal.

Key goals include:

  • Developing Infrastructure: Providing pucca houses, improving village infrastructure, and ensuring access to water, electricity, and healthcare.
  • Economic Empowerment: Promoting skill development, entrepreneurship, and livelihood opportunities.
  • Education: Enhancing educational access and infrastructure, including tribal hostels.
  • Health: Improving healthcare access and facilities, and addressing issues like Sickle Cell Disease.
Innovative components of the Abhiyan include promoting tribal home stays for tourism, sustainable livelihood initiatives for Forest Rights Act (FRA) holders, and upgrading tribal residential schools and hostels.

The Abhiyan builds on the success of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN), launched on Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in November 2023, focusing on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
