New Delhi, 1st June: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday commenced the nomination process for elections to 27 seats in the Rajya Sabha and 17 seats in State Legislative Councils across multiple states.

According to the poll schedule announced by the Commission, nominations for the biennial and by-elections began at 11 am on June 1 and will continue until June 8. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on June 9, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11.

The elections include biennial polls to 24 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 states and by-elections to one seat each in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

The 24 Rajya Sabha seats are spread across Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Mizoram.

The Commission has also announced biennial elections to nine seats in the Bihar Legislative Council and seven seats in the Karnataka Legislative Council. In addition, a by-election will be held for one vacant seat in the Bihar Legislative Council.

The Election Commission said Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for all elections have been appointed and the relevant notifications have been published in the Gazette of India and respective State Gazettes.

If contests arise, polling for all Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections will be conducted on June 18 between 8 am and 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm on the same day.

The elections are expected to influence the composition of the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils in the concerned states, with political parties gearing up to finalise their candidates ahead of the June 8 nomination deadline.
