New Delhi, 23rd July: The Lok Sabha is set to hold a key legislative debate on Thursday as the government takes up the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 for consideration and passage.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will move the Bill, which seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, in the Lower House.
Alongside the Bill, the House will also consider a statutory resolution moved by Opposition MPs Sougata Ray, N.K. Premachandran and Adv. Dean Kuriakose, seeking to disapprove the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, which was promulgated by the President on May 16, 2026.
According to the revised List of Business, the statutory resolution and the amendment Bill will be taken up for discussion together before the House proceeds with further legislative action.
The debate is expected to witness exchanges between the Treasury and Opposition benches over the government’s decision to promulgate the Ordinance ahead of introducing the legislation in Parliament.
