New Delhi, 23rd July: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday paid floral tributes to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak at his portrait in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan on the occasion of the freedom fighter’s birth anniversary.
Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament and other dignitaries also offered floral tributes to Lokmanya Tilak during the commemorative event. Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh also paid his respects.
Remembering Tilak’s contribution to India’s freedom movement, Birla and other dignitaries honoured the legendary nationalist, who is widely regarded as one of the foremost architects of India’s struggle for independence.
Popularly known as “Lokmanya,” Tilak is remembered as a visionary leader, scholar and social reformer who played a pioneering role in awakening political consciousness among the masses. He was a strong advocate of Swaraj (self-rule) and inspired generations of Indians with his famous slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!”
The portrait of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, then known as Parliament House, was unveiled on July 28, 1956, by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in recognition of Tilak’s extraordinary contribution to the nation.
