Bongaigaon, 1st Oct: Nine Bangladeshi nationals were arrested at New Bongaigaon Railway Station in Assam’s Bongaigaon district during a joint operation by Bongaigaon Police and the Government Railway Police (GRP), officials said on Wednesday.
Bongaigaon SSP Numal Mahatta said the individuals were identified as Bangladeshi nationals during questioning. Police recovered four Bangladeshi national identity cards, six mobile phones, one Bangladeshi passport, three suspected fake Indian Aadhaar cards and five railway tickets from their possession.
According to the SSP, a preliminary investigation indicated that the group had entered Assam through a neighbouring state and was planning to travel onward from New Bongaigaon. Police said the individuals told investigators they were planning to leave the area for work.
The operation initially resulted in the arrest of six people, followed by the detention of three others, bringing the total to nine.
Authorities said all necessary legal action would be taken following the investigation.
The arrests come amid continued operations by Assam Police against alleged illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals into the state. Police said 27 Bangladeshi nationals, including men, women and minors, were apprehended in separate operations in Guwahati and Rangiya on September 16.
An Assam Police official said the crackdown against alleged illegal infiltration would continue and that those apprehended would be dealt with according to law.
