Over 1,100 officials and volunteers join riverbank cleanup under Swachhata Hi Seva 2026

New Delhi, 2nd Oct: Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil led a large-scale Shramdaan activity at Kalindi Kunj Ghat near Okhla Barrage in New Delhi on October 1 as part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 – Nirantar Prayas campaign.

The cleanliness drive, organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, began at 7:30 am and saw the participation of more than 1,100 officials and volunteers from 16 organisations under the ministry.

Speaking at the event, Patil recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on cleanliness alongside independence and said cleanliness should be treated as a collective responsibility. He also acknowledged the contribution of Safai Mitras in maintaining public spaces.

The minister stressed that cleanliness should not be viewed as a periodic activity but as a continuous commitment linked to environmental protection and river conservation.

Minister of State for Jal Shakti Shri V. Somanna also participated in the programme.

Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Shri Ashok K.K. Meena, said the Shramdaan formed part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign and highlighted Jan Bhagidari as an important element of the cleanliness movement.

Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Smt. Archana Varma, along with senior officers and staff, spearheaded the cleanliness drive.

Officials and employees from 16 organisations, including the Central Water Commission (CWC), National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), National Water Development Agency (NWDA), Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS), National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD), National Water Informatics Centre (NWIC), National Water Mission (NWM), Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB), Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC), Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and WAPCOS, participated in the initiative.

Participants removed plastic waste, debris and other litter from the riverbank around Kalindi Kunj Ghat. The ministry said the cleanliness effort would continue as part of the broader objective of Swachh Bharat-Viksit Bharat.
