New Delhi, 26th Oct: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests across the country on Monday, demanding Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s resignation over his controversial remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father.
The controversy began on Sunday at an event in Patna, where Kharge reportedly said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega,” while responding to an audience member who said the Prime Minister would not go anywhere. The comment drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who demanded an apology.
BJP workers and leaders held demonstrations in several cities, including Patna, Jammu and Bengaluru. In Bihar, protesters marched against Kharge and burned an effigy of the Congress chief. In Jammu, party workers burned his posters, while a major protest was organised at Freedom Park in Bengaluru.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he was shocked and deeply hurt by the comment about Modi’s late father. He questioned how the national president of a party with a long political history could make such a statement.
Singh also criticised the Congress for defending Kharge instead of acknowledging the controversy and expressing regret.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi targeted both Kharge and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the party’s leadership was displaying frustration and political immaturity. He also referred to earlier controversial remarks by Congress leaders.
Congress leaders hit back, arguing that the BJP was applying different standards when responding to political remarks. Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge, son of the Congress chief, accused the ruling party of turning issues into controversies and said BJP leaders should also be judged by their past statements.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha, an ally of the Congress in the INDIA bloc, said such remarks were not expected from Kharge. However, he questioned whether similar outrage had been expressed when BJP leaders made controversial comments about Sonia Gandhi and Kharge.
The political exchange has deepened tensions between the BJP and Congress, with the BJP continuing to demand Kharge’s resignation and an apology.
