ABVP Demands Reinstallation of Ambedkar Statue Removed from DU Campus

New Delhi, 18th Sept. A day after a statue of Bhim Rao Ambedkar was installed at the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) office in North Campus, local authorities removed it, prompting outrage from the student body, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), on Tuesday.

Outgoing DUSU president Tushar Dedha had unveiled the statue on Monday, the final day of the ABVP-led union’s term, with MCD North Zone Deputy Chairperson Rekha Amarnath in attendance. Following its removal, the ABVP-led DUSU submitted a memorandum to Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, demanding the reinstallation of the statue and the creation of a Constitution Park on campus.

The removal of the statue hurt the sentiments of the student community, the ABVP said in a statement, urging for the statue’s reinstallation at the Law Centre and the park’s construction. The delegation from ABVP included top DUSU officials and law center student leaders.

ABVP Delhi Secretary Harsh Atri said, “The removal of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue by the Delhi government is unfortunate and hurtful to students. We demand its immediate reinstallation and the creation of a Constitution Park.”

The Vice-Chancellor reportedly responded positively to their demands.
