Pune, 27th May. After the 17-year-old accused in the Pune Porsche disaster spent around Rs 70,000 in two bars for alcohol consumption before killing a tech-loving couple on a two-wheeler, the district administration decided to tighten rules and regulations for all the bars and pubs in the city.

Thousands of workers at bars and pubs throughout the city, however, have objected to the abrupt crackdown, claiming it will negatively impact their ability to support themselves and their families.

According to news agency PTI, which cited an official, Pune authorities are considering livestreaming the entrance and departure points of all pubs and bars in Pune to improve compliance with laws and regulations.

The official emphasized that bars and pubs had to follow the set hour limits and that no minor should enter these businesses. According to him, there have been complaints from a number of residents over eateries and bars operating past their designated closing times.

“We can keep a close eye on the closing timings and also monitor the exit and entry points of these establishments with webcasting,” the official told news agency PTI.

He gave an explanation for the webcasting choice, stating that while it is now challenging to “physically monitor” activities outside of clubs and pubs, new technologies would make it feasible.

“We successfully used webcasting during elections and more than 50 per cent of polling booths were webcast, and we could see what was happening there,” added the official.

Concerning the necessary infrastructure for overseeing the next webcast, the representative mentioned that the specifics of the idea will be worked out. The Maharashtra excise department superintendent, Charan Singh Rajput, told PTI that the webcasting concept is being worked on. He added that 49 alcohol-serving outlets have already been targeted by the agency for various infractions.

Their anger has been stoked by the municipal government’s abrupt moves on Pune’s clubs and pubs. Following directives from the District Magistrate, up to 32 of these establishments in different parts of the city were subject to action.

On Friday, May 24, a large number of workers from these businesses staged a protest in Pune, saying that they were losing their jobs as a result. One employee, lashing out at the two bars that supplied alcohol to the teenager who is accused of being involved in the Porsche crash, told news agency PTI that they are “facing the brunt” as a result of their negligence.

“We need to take care of our families. We are in danger of losing our employment because pubs are being targeted,” a different staff member stated.

Owners of clubs and pubs as well as around 2,500 employees had gathered for the demonstration.

On May 19, the day of the incident, the 17-year-old boy and his buddies spent an additional Rs 21,000 at BlaK Marriott Club after consuming liquor valued at Rs 48,000 at Cossie Bar. This was prior to the adolescent, who had received his sports automobile as a birthday present from his father, smashing the bike the tech couple was riding.

The minor was granted release within 14 hours of the incident, which has since taken on numerous twists. The local court determined that the offense was not “serious” enough to warrant denial of bail. Writing a 300-word essay on the “effect of road accidents and their solution” was one of the requirements set forth in his bail package. As a result of the widespread indignation this caused across the country, he was subsequently placed under house arrest until June 5.

In relation to the case, his grandpa and father, Vishal Agarwal, a real estate entrepreneur, have also been detained on suspicion of trying to buy off their driver by offering bribes.

At a press conference earlier in the day, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar informed the media that two doctors from Sassoon Hospital in Pune, one of whom was the head of the forensic department, and another had been taken into custody for allegedly tampering with evidence. It was found that the blood samples of the accused youngster had been exchanged for those of an uninvolved party. According to police, the 17-year-old’s original blood sample was thrown in a trash can.
