Arvind Kejriwal Challenges CBI Arrest in Supreme Court

New Delhi, 12th August.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge his recent arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam. The special leave petition, filed before the apex court, contests the Delhi High Court’s August 5 decision, which dismissed Kejriwal’s plea against his arrest and subsequent remand.

On Monday, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi brought the matter before Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, requesting an urgent listing. CJI Chandrachud directed Singhvi to email the registry for further examination.

The Delhi High Court, in its decision, ruled that the arrest was not without justifiable reasons or illegal. The court has yet to deliver its verdict on Kejriwal’s bail plea related to the CBI case, having reserved judgment on July 29.

Earlier on the same day, the CBI filed its charge sheet against Kejriwal and other accused before a special court. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also filed a prosecution complaint in the money laundering case, naming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its national convenor Kejriwal as accused.

On July 12, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail in the ED’s money laundering case, but he remained in custody due to the CBI’s arrest. Additionally, a local court has extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until August 20 in the excise policy case.
