New Delhi, 25th March.
Amid discussions about whether Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal can still perform his duties from prison, he issued his first order from the Enforcement Directorate’s lock-up on Sunday. The order was regarding the water supply in the national capital, and he communicated it through a note to Delhi minister Atishi, who is in charge of the portfolio.

During a press conference later in the day, Atishi revealed that she was emotional upon reading the Chief Minister’s note. She expressed admiration for Kejriwal’s dedication to addressing the water and sewage issues of Delhi residents even while in jail. She emphasized that Kejriwal’s commitment to the people of Delhi remains unwavering despite his current situation.

Atishi also challenged the BJP, stating that while they may have arrested Kejriwal, they cannot suppress his love and responsibility towards the people of Delhi. She reiterated that Kejriwal’s work for the city will continue uninterrupted.

Reading from the letter, Atishi shared that Kejriwal expressed concern about water and sewer problems in certain areas of Delhi and instructed officials to ensure immediate solutions for residents. She highlighted Kejriwal’s ongoing dedication to the people of Delhi even during his time in custody.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED in connection to a money laundering case related to Delhi’s former liquor policy. Despite his arrest, the AAP has affirmed that he will remain Chief Minister. However, governing from jail poses challenges due to restrictions on meetings and interactions.

One potential solution could be placing Kejriwal under house arrest with approval from the Lieutenant Governor. This option, though, may face obstacles given the strained relationship between the AAP government and the central authorities.

Legal experts suggest that if Kejriwal does not resign, the Centre may need to suspend or remove him from office, following the standard procedure for arrested public officials. Kejriwal’s arrest is part of a series of high-profile detentions linked to the liquor policy case.
