Atishi Threatens Indefinite Fast, Urges PM Modi to Resolve Delhi’s Water Crisis

New Delhi, 19th June. Delhi Water Minister Atishi has escalated concerns over the capital’s water crisis, alleging that Haryana’s withholding of Delhi’s water share is exacerbating shortages affecting millions. At a press conference today, she said that despite a requirement of 613 million gallons per day (MGD), only 513 MGD was released by Haryana, leaving over 28 lakh residents without adequate water supply.

“I have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate intervention to resolve this crisis. If no action is taken within two days, I will begin an indefinite fast from June 21,” Atishi declared, highlighting the urgency of the situation exacerbated by scorching heatwave conditions.

The minister emphasized multiple appeals to Haryana for resolution, stressing the dire need for adequate water supply amid rising public distress.

In response, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva accused Atishi of theatrical tactics, alleging diversion from issues of water theft and black marketing. “The AAP government’s failure to manage water distribution warrants dismissal,” Sachdeva asserted, citing purported surplus water allocations from Haryana.

Delhi Congress Chief Devender Yadav critiqued the timing of Atishi’s appeal to the Prime Minister, suggesting earlier proactive measures should have been taken by the Delhi government to manage water availability and distribution effectively.
