New Delhi, 21st Sept. Atishi, the Chief Minister-designate of Delhi, will be sworn in today along with her new Council of Ministers at the Raj Niwas. The ceremony, scheduled for 4:30 pm, will mark the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) fourth consecutive government in the national capital.

Atishi will become the 17th female chief minister in India’s history. Her new Council of Ministers will include Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat, a newcomer, along with seasoned ministers Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain.

The appointment of Atishi as chief minister follows the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, which President Droupadi Murmu accepted. The President also cleared the appointments of the new ministers.

Although the ceremony is expected to be a low-key event, the AAP has been preparing to transition leadership. Kejriwal, who was released from Tihar jail on September 13 after more than five months in custody in connection with the excise policy case, surprised many by announcing his resignation just two days later. Citing “mudslinging” by the BJP over corruption allegations, Kejriwal said he would return as chief minister only after receiving a “certificate of honesty” from Delhi voters in the upcoming assembly polls.

Atishi’s government will have a brief tenure, with Delhi assembly elections scheduled for February 2025. During this time, her administration is expected to prioritize key policies and welfare programs, such as the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and the doorstep delivery of services.

In the previous Kejriwal government, Atishi held 13 major portfolios, including finance, power, and education. Other returning ministers are expected to maintain their prior responsibilities, while Mukesh Ahlawat is likely to fill the portfolios left vacant by former minister Raaj Kumar Anand, who resigned in April 2024.
