Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s Courage Should Not Be Forgotten: Meenakshi Lekhi

New Delhi, 25th June. The National Monuments Authority commemorated Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s Martyrdom Day at Red Fort in New Delhi on Saturday. According to the Indian calendar, today is the great Sikh ruler’s martyrdom day.

 Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, NMA Chairman Tarun Vijay, and Baba Jatinder Pal Singh Sodhi, a tenth generation descendant of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, all attended the occasion at Red Fort Lawns.

Meenakashi Lekhi, speaking on the occasion, said that Baba Banda Singh Bahadur defended the honour of his religion by sacrificing his life, and his bravery should not be forgotten. The Union Minister pledged her full support for making Banda Bahadur’s martyrdom site a national monument.

Lekhi went on to say that the youth of Punjab should be inspired by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Ji.

Dhadhi Jatha was performed at the event, and an exhibition depicting the life of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was on display.

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was a great Sikh warrior and a commander of Khalsa army who defeated the Mughals and liberated a large part of North India from oppressive Mughal rule and established the Khalsa rule in Punjab.

Banda Singh Bahadur abolished the Zamindari system and granted property rights to the tillers of the land.

He was a Noble ruler who introduced the Nanak Shahi coins. He was captured by Mughal ruler Farrukhsiyar and his martyrdom took place in Mehrauli where a monument stands in his memory.
