New Delhi, 16th August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a phone call from Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim Chief Advisor, on Friday. The two leaders discussed the current situation in Bangladesh following the recent ouster of Sheikh Hasina. In a post on X, Modi highlighted that he reiterated India’s support for a “democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive” Bangladesh, while Yunus assured him of the safety and security of Hindus and other minority communities in the country.

Modi’s post read, “Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety, and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.”

This assurance follows reports of attacks targeting the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Earlier, Modi had expressed his concern for the safety of Hindus and other minorities when he congratulated Yunus on his new role. Modi also voiced his worries during his Independence Day speech on Thursday.

“As a neighbouring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope the situation there becomes normal soon,” Modi said in his address from the Red Fort, adding, “In particular, the concerns of 140 crore Indians that the security of Hindus and minorities there is ensured.”

In related developments, Bangladesh’s de facto foreign minister, Touhid Hossain, informed Reuters on Thursday that the interim government may decide to request India’s extradition of Hasina, who faces multiple legal cases, including murder accusations. Hossain suggested that if the home and law ministries decide to pursue her return, it could create a challenging situation for the Indian government. Indian officials have yet to respond to Hossain’s comments.
