Bengal Train Crash: Signal Failure and Safety Protocol Under Scrutiny

Investigation Focuses on Signal System Failure and Protocol Violations

GG News Bureau
Kolkata, 18th June. The horrific collision between the Kanchanjunga Express and a goods train near Rangapani station in West Bengal has left nine dead and 41 injured, prompting a deep investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident.

Sequence of Events:

Early Monday morning, the Kanchanjunga Express, en route from Agartala to Kolkata, was stationary near Rangapani when it was struck from behind by a goods train. Preliminary reports from the Railway Board suggest a combination of human error and signal failure played pivotal roles in the collision.

Signal System Malfunction:

The goods train, operating under a faulty automatic signalling system since early morning, received a ‘TA 912’ authorization from the station master at Rangapani. This document allowed the train to pass all red signals due to the signalling defect, with strict safety protocols in place. However, the driver failed to adhere to the mandated speed limit of 10 kmph and collided with the stationary Kanchanjunga Express at 8:55 am.

Safety Protocol Violations:

Contrastingly, the Kanchanjunga Express’s driver diligently followed safety protocols, stopping at each red signal for one minute as required under ‘TA 912’. The collision, therefore, stemmed from the goods train’s excessive speed, violating safety norms outlined in the authorization.

Official Response and Investigations:

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the site, overseeing relief efforts and announcing compensation for the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and monitored rescue operations closely.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has launched a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain culpability and prevent future occurrences.

Political Reactions:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the Railway Ministry for alleged negligence in passenger safety and emphasized the need for improved safety measures over fare hikes.

Governor CV Ananda Bose called for prioritizing victim treatment over political blame games.
