New Delhi, 13th April. The Bharatiya Janata Party announced the names of candidates for the upcoming Parliamentary and Assembly byelections in Punjab and Odisha on Wednesday.

By-elections in Punjab’s Lok Sabha constituency of Jalandhar (SC) and Odisha’s Assembly constituency of Jharsuguda are scheduled for May 10, with results to be announced on May 13, coinciding with Karnataka’s Assembly elections.

Sardar Indar Iqbal Singh Atwal of the BJP has been nominated for the Jalandhar (SC) bypoll, and Tankadhar Tripathy for the Jharsuguda bypoll.

On Wednesday evening, the party’s Central Election Committee announced both names.

The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has been vacant since January, when Congress MP Santokh Chaudhary died while walking alongside Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. He died because of a heart attack. Following Chaudhary’s death, byelections were held in the seat.

The Congress has named Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary, the wife of Santokh Chaudhary, as its candidate for the Jalandhar bypolls, while Tankadhar will face BJD candidate Dipali Das and Congress candidate Tarun Pandey.

“Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary as the party candidate to contest the forthcoming by-election to the Lok Sabha from 4-Jalandhar-SC parliamentary constituency of Punjab,” the party said in a statement, last month.

Meanwhile, the bypoll in Odisha’s Jharsuguda was prompted by the death of then-state health minister Naba Das, who was shot at point-blank range by a police officer in broad daylight on January 29 this year in Jharsugud district.

Sushil Rinku joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on April 5, just hours after being expelled from the Congress, in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann.

Sushil Rinku, a former Congress MLA from Jalandhar West constituency, was expelled from the party for engaging in “anti-party” activities, according to the Congress party.

“Sushil Rinku is welcome in AAP’s family, I have full hope that the people of Jalandhar will help us in winning the Lok Sabha bypolls,” Arvind Kejriwal said in a press briefing.
