Jammu and Kashmir, 20th May. In the midst of the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Lok Sabha elections, militants shot and killed BJP-affiliated ex-sarpanch Aijaz Sheikh in his Shopian house.

Sheikh’s family members narrated how some assailants broke into his home on Saturday night and opened fire on him directly. Investigating the event, the local police revealed that before shooting Sheikh, the mysterious gunmen had demanded his identity card. For his final ceremonies, Sheikh’s body was taken to his town on Sunday morning. Hundreds of people attended the event. The former serpanch was elected five years ago, and as of January of this year, his mandate was over. Sheikh became well-known on social media as a result of a recently popular video that praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development achievements.

Shortly after unknown gunmen on a two-wheeler opened fire on a visiting couple in Pahalgam named Tabrez and Farha, Sheikh was attacked. Though Farha, Tabrez’s wife, is stable but being monitored, officials added, Tabrez’s health is still severe. According to their family in Jaipur, the couple’s 5-year-old twins fled unharmed but were in a state of shock.

The National Conference, the PDP, and the BJP are among the national and regional political groups who denounced the attacks.

The events take place concurrently with the region’s Lok Sabha elections, which are witnessing record levels of voter turnout. Today, the Baramulla seat had its fifth phase of voting, and as of 1 PM, the voter turnout was an impressive 34.79%. In the districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Budgam, and portions of Shopian, 36.58 percent of voters participated in the fourth round of voting for the general elections to the 18th Lok Sabha.
