A court in Maharashtra’s Thane district has remanded BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, who was arrested for allegedly firing at a local Shiv Sena leader inside a police station, to judicial custody for 14 days.

The incident occurred on February 2 when the MLA reportedly opened fire on Mahesh Gaikwad, the Kalyan unit chief of Shiv Sena, inside the chamber of the senior inspector of Hill Line police station in Ulhasnagar.

Charges against the accused include attempted murder and other offenses. Following the incident, the injured Sena leader was hospitalized in Thane and is currently recuperating.

MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, along with his associates Harshal Kene, Sandeep Sarvankar, Divyesh alias Vicky Ganatra, and driver Ranjit Yadav, appeared in court at the conclusion of their police custody. Tight security was observed around the court premises during their appearance.

Advocates Nilesh Pandey and Umar Kazi, representing the accused, informed reporters outside the court that the police had requested an extension of the accused’s remand for interrogation, but the court denied the request and ordered judicial custody for the accused instead.
