Gaurav Bhatia, national spokesperson for the BJP, slammed the West Bengal government on Wednesday regarding allegations of sexual harassment in Sandeshkhali block. Bhatia accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being a passive observer in the face of such serious accusations.

Addressing a press conference, Bhatia highlighted what he described as the prevailing lawlessness in West Bengal, asserting that under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, the law of anarchy prevails. He condemned the Chief Minister’s apparent indifference towards upholding the dignity of women, particularly Hindu women targeted by individuals like Sheikh Shahjahan, who is currently evading authorities.

In a scathing attack on the Chief Minister, Bhatia alleged that West Bengal has transformed into a state governed by and for perpetrators of sexual violence. He accused Mamata Banerjee of siding with the accused instead of supporting the victims.

In response, the Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt peace in Sandeshkhali, attributing the clashes to the BJP’s provocative actions.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government reinstated Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in several gram panchayats, including Sandeshkhali, until February 19, citing the need to maintain law and order amidst the BJP’s agitation.

Earlier, the Calcutta High Court had lifted prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 (CrPC) on Tuesday.

The political tensions surrounding the events in Sandeshkhali led to violence in Basirhat on Tuesday, where clashes erupted between police and BJP supporters.

Women in Sandeshkhali have been staging protests over alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates, demanding justice and the arrest of those implicated in alleged land scams and cases of sexual assault.
