Majuli, 6th April.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, who is running for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, expressed confidence in winning. He believes that BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi will lose if the number of selfies taken with him by the people translates into votes. Gaurav Gogoi, the current Congress MP of Kaliabor, is now contesting from Jorhat.

During his campaign, Gogoi spent two days in Majuli, the world’s largest river island in the Brahmaputra. He held 12 street corner meetings across the district. Majuli was previously part of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency but was added to Jorhat in the recent delimitation exercise by the Election Commission.

Jorhat, once held by Gaurav’s father Tarun Gogoi, shifted to BJP in 2014. The constituency has a significant population of communities like Ahom, Thengal-Kachari, Mising, and tea tribes. Gogoi aims to connect emotionally with voters, especially the youth, to win back the seat from BJP.

Despite the challenge of bridging a gap of over 82,000 votes, Gogoi remains optimistic. He started his campaign day with a meeting in Kalitapar village in Majuli, where he was warmly welcomed by supporters with traditional music and dances.

Gogoi received overwhelming love from the people, with many taking selfies with him. He assured the crowd that if these selfies turned into votes, BJP would lose by a large margin. He criticized BJP for unfulfilled promises and highlighted issues faced by Majuli under the current government.

After a day of campaigning, Gogoi left Majuli for Jorhat town, where he had closed-door meetings with various groups and ended the day with a dinner meeting with local journalists. The election in Jorhat is scheduled for April 19, along with four other seats in Upper Assam.
