BJP Wins 240 Seats, Congress 99 in Lok Sabha Elections: EC Announces Final Results

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 5th June.
The Election Commission of India has announced the final results for all Lok Sabha constituencies, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing 240 of the 543 seats and the Congress 99. The last constituency to declare its result was Beed in Maharashtra, where the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Bajrang Manohar Sonwane defeated BJP’s Pankaja Munde by a margin of 6,553 votes.

Although the Lok Sabha comprises 543 members, counting was held for 542 seats, as BJP’s Surat candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed. The final results, declared early on Wednesday, indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to form the government for a third consecutive term. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a majority in the Lok Sabha despite suffering significant losses in three Hindi heartland states after a fiercely contested election, which many viewed as a referendum on Modi’s leadership.

The BJP, which campaigned heavily under Modi’s name, won 240 seats, falling short of the 272-seat majority mark. This shortfall necessitates the support of allies within the NDA to form the government, a notable decline from the 303 and 282 seats the BJP won in 2019 and 2014, respectively, when it had a majority on its own.

Support from key allies such as N Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], which won 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, respectively, along with other alliance partners, enabled the NDA to cross the halfway mark.

The Congress, part of the opposition INDIA bloc, increased its seat count to 99, compared to 52 in 2019, thereby cutting into the BJP’s vote share in states like Rajasthan and Haryana. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party bolstered the INDIA bloc’s morale with 37 seats. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), another significant member of the opposition alliance, secured 29 seats in West Bengal, up from its 2019 tally of 22. The BJP, which had won 18 seats in the previous Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, managed to secure 12 seats this time.

The election results did not yield the landslide victory the BJP-led NDA had anticipated, nor did they align with the projections made by many exit polls.

This electoral exercise, the largest democratic process globally, saw more than 640 million votes cast over seven phases from April 19 to June 1.
