Agartala, 18th August. A BJP worker who sustained injuries in an attack during the counting of votes for the panchayat election in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on August 12 has died, police confirmed on Sunday.

Asish Paul was one of 12 BJP workers targeted by miscreants in Kathalia. He was initially taken to GBP Hospital in Agartala for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, according to Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Law & Order, Ananta Das.

After Paul’s death, locals in his native village staged a demonstration and blocked a road at Sonamura. The blockade was lifted after police assured the protesters that those responsible for the attack would be apprehended soon, another officer reported.

Pratima Bhoumik, a former Union Minister and BJP’s state core committee member, has pledged to seek justice for Paul’s family.

“Around 30 CPI(M) goons attacked the BJP workers during the vote counting. I will not rest until those responsible for Asish Paul’s murder are held accountable through legal proceedings,” Bhoumik stated.

She also vowed to prevent the CPI(M) from securing any seats in the panchayat in the Sonamura sub-division, criticizing their past rule.

This incident follows the alleged murder of Badal Shil, a CPI(M) candidate for South Tripura Zilla Parishad, by BJP-backed individuals in Rajnagar on July 13.
