BRO Marks 65th Raising Day: Defence Secretary Commends Role in National Security and Infra Development

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) commemorated its 65th Raising Day on May 7, 2024, with a ceremony held in New Delhi, graced by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane.

In his address, the Defence Secretary praised the BRO’s unwavering commitment in challenging terrains and harsh weather conditions, emphasizing its pivotal role in bolstering the nation’s security and fostering socio-economic advancement in remote areas.

Aramane urged the BRO to embrace cutting-edge technology for expedited project completion, advocating for automation and mechanization to enhance efficiency and reduce reliance on manual labor.

Highlighting the BRO’s significant contributions during crises such as the Silkyara Tunnel Collapse and the Sikkim Floods, the Defence Secretary underscored its pivotal role in the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at holistic development of border regions.

Director General of Border Roads, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, extended greetings to BRO personnel, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to national security, connectivity, and development. He encouraged all members to uphold the motto “Connecting Places, Connecting People,” fostering progress, prosperity, and unity.

The ceremony featured the unveiling of a compendium on Sela Tunnel and several books, alongside Excellence Awards honoring BRO personnel for their outstanding contributions. Women achievers within the organization were also felicitated, highlighting BRO’s commitment to gender equality and inclusivity.

Founded with just two projects in 1960, the BRO has evolved into a dynamic organization with 18 projects spanning 11 states and three Union Territories. It has constructed vital infrastructure in high-altitude regions, including roads, bridges, tunnels, and airfields, significantly contributing to the nation’s strategic objectives.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, the BRO completed 125 infrastructure projects worth Rs 3,611 crore, including the monumental Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. Future endeavors include the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, poised to become the world’s highest tunnel upon completion.

With increased budgetary allocations and a focus on gender equality, the BRO remains steadfast in its mission to enhance national security and infrastructure development, embodying resilience, excellence, and dedication.
