Kolkata, 19th March. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Agnimitra Paul for the Lok Sabha by-elections where she will contest against Actor-turned- politician Shatrughan Sinha of Trinamool Congress.

Paul is a fashion designer-turned-politician.

Agnimitra Paul, the sitting MLA, is also the general secretary of West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected from Asansol Dakshin (South) in the 2021 Assembly elections after she defeated the then Trinamool Congress candidate Sayani Ghosh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has also nominated Keya Ghosh as its candidate for Assembly by-polls from Ballygunge.

The by-elections in these two constituencies are slated to be held on April 12. Results of the elections will be declared on April 16.

The Trinamool Congress has fielded former union ministers Shatrughan Sinha for Lok Sabha by-polls from Asansol and Babul Supriyo for Assembly by-elections from Ballygunge.

Notably, both Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo once used to be members of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Reacting to the nominations of Shatrughan Sinha and Babul Supriyo, BJP’s candidate Agnimitra Paul said, “People like Babul Supriyo and Shatrughan Sinha have no ideology or policy in their life. BJP is the largest party of the nation and no individual matters for the party. The most important thing is the ‘Kamal’ (BJP symbol). Shatrughan Sinha used to be in Congress, then he joined BJP and later moved to TMC. Now he might join AAP as well.”

The Asansol LS seat fell vacant after Babul Supriyo, a two-time Bharatiya Janata Party MP, quit the party in October last year and joined the Trinamool Congress. The Ballygunge Assembly seat fell vacant due to the demise of state Minister Subrata Mukherjee.
