Kolkata, 27th July: Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra is facing legal action after multiple complaints were filed against her for allegedly displaying an objectionable image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a student protest in Kolkata over the NEET paper leak issue.
According to the complaints, Mitra participated in the demonstration held on Friday, where protesters demanded accountability over the alleged examination irregularities and the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. She was allegedly photographed holding a poster carrying a derogatory depiction of the Prime Minister.
BJP leader Keya Ghosh lodged a complaint against the actor at the Anandapur Police Station on Sunday. Similar complaints have also reportedly been filed at multiple police stations, including the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station.
Demanding legal action, Ghosh alleged that the poster insulted the office of the Prime Minister and called for Mitra’s immediate arrest.
The complaints reportedly invoke provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to provocation with intent to cause a breach of peace, public support for provocative conduct and defamation.
Responding to the complaints, Mitra released a video statement on social media, saying she was prepared to face the consequences of her actions.
“If you wish to arrest me, then arrest me; if you wish to send me to the gallows, then send me to the gallows. I believe there will be a movement against this as well,” she said.
Police have not yet announced any arrests or officially confirmed the registration of an FIR in connection with the complaints. The matter remains under legal consideration.
