New Delhi, 12th Sept. A case has been registered in Maharashtra’s Latur city, against 12 individuals, including the owner of a house, for allegedly assaulting and molesting the wife of a Block Development Officer (BDO) who was a tenant at the property, police confirmed.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed on Wednesday at Vivekanand Chowk police station, the BDO and his family had been residing in a rented house at Chhatrapati Chowk on Ausa Road since June 2022. The property is owned by one of the accused, who recently demanded a rent increase. When the family declined the hike, the owner allegedly threatened to evict them.

The situation escalated on August 26 when the owner, accompanied by his lawyer, visited the house and demanded that the BDO vacate the premises or face repercussions. The FIR states that when the BDO’s mother attempted to mediate, she was reportedly insulted by the accused. The situation grew more tense when the BDO’s wife intervened; she was allegedly grabbed by the shoulder and pushed by the owner, with nine other individuals joining in to threaten her husband.

On Tuesday, the family’s belongings were forcibly removed from the house by a group of individuals, according to police reports. Following a complaint lodged by the BDO’s wife, a case has been registered against two identified individuals and eight others who are yet to be identified, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
