New Delhi, 30th Sept. The Central government extended CBDT Chairperson Nitin Gupta’s tenure “on a contract basis” for nine months on Saturday, the day of his scheduled retirement.

Gupta (60), an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the Income-tax department, was appointed head of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in June last year.

He was set to retire on September 30th.

According to the government order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Gupta’s re-appointment as CBDT Chairman on a contract basis, with effect from 1.10.2023 to 30.06.2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the recruitment rules, on the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers.

The CBDT is the Income-tax Department’s policy-making apex body. It is led by a chairman and can include up to six members with the status of special secretary.
