Kolkata, 2nd May.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has forwarded a preliminary status report on its probe into cases of illegal land grabbing and harassment in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali to the division bench of the Calcutta High Court. The report, submitted in a sealed envelope, highlights challenges faced by the CBI due to alleged non-cooperation from the state government in providing crucial land records.

With around 900 complaints received through its portal regarding illegal land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, the CBI emphasized the necessity of accessing original land reports for a thorough investigation.

The division bench, headed by Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, directed the state government to furnish all requested documents to the CBI within one week and to facilitate seamless cooperation throughout the investigation process.

Referring to a previous Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI probe, which was upheld by the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice underscored the importance of state government cooperation.

Additionally, the division bench highlighted the state government’s obligation to fulfill court directives, including the provision of necessary lighting in Sandeshkhali streets within a specified timeframe.

In response to concerns regarding compliance with court orders, the division bench allowed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene in the case. The next hearing is scheduled for June 13, signaling ongoing judicial oversight of the Sandeshkhali investigation.
