CBI Takes Over Investigation in Trainee Doctor Rape and Murder Case

GG News Bureau
Kolkata, 14th August. A day after assuming control of the investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.

Here are the key developments in this significant case:

Accused Custody: The CBI has taken custody of the primary suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer. Roy is set to undergo a medical examination as part of the investigation. The agency’s approach involves three main actions: visiting the seminar hall where the victim’s body was discovered last Friday, taking Roy to court to seek his custody, and coordinating with Kolkata Police officers who previously investigated the case.

Focus Areas: Sources informed that the CBI’s investigation will concentrate on six primary areas. The agency will explore allegations made by the victim’s family regarding gang-rape. Investigators will determine whether Roy acted alone or had accomplices, and whether evidence was tampered with post-crime.

Additional Investigations: The CBI will also address questions raised by the Calcutta High Court, including why the murder was initially reported as a suicide. The agency will investigate the delay in informing police about the murder and whether the hospital administration played any role in the case.

Court Order: The CBI probe was ordered by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, a key demand of the striking doctors. Medical professionals outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expressed hope that the CBI’s involvement would lead to a thorough investigation.

Forensic Evidence: The CBI’s Special Crime Unit will search for forensic evidence, including fingerprints, footprints, hair, semen, or any material linking Roy to the crime. Previous reports indicated that while Roy had washed his clothes after the murder, blood from the victim was still found on his shoes.

Parents’ Allegations: The victim’s parents have informed the High Court that 150 mg of semen was discovered in their daughter’s body, suggesting gang-rape. Their petition argues that multiple perpetrators were involved, as the crime could not have been committed by one person alone.

Doctors’ Strike: Despite the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) calling off their strike, protests continue in various locations. The resident doctors’ association of AIIMS Delhi and other organizations have expressed differing views from FORDA.

Legislative Demands: The striking doctors are calling for the enactment of a Central Healthcare Protection Act to prevent attacks on medical personnel. Although 19 states have implemented protection laws, doctors are seeking a uniform central Act.

Case Details: The trainee doctor was found raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her autopsy report indicated that she was killed between 3 and 5 am, having sustained multiple injuries before being smothered.

Next Steps: The investigation is expected to proceed with a focus on uncovering the full extent of the crime, identifying all involved parties, and ensuring justice for the victim.
