CJI Chandrachud Praises Justice Aniruddha Bose’s Judicial Legacy in Farewell

 Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud bid farewell to Justice Aniruddha Bose on Tuesday, hailing him as a “stellar judge” and a quintessential Bengali ‘Bhadrolok’ as he prepares to take on the role of director at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.

Justice Bose, who ascended to the Supreme Court bench on May 24, 2019, is set to depart from the apex court, leaving behind a legacy of profound contributions to the legal arena.

In a heartfelt tribute during a farewell function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), CJI Chandrachud lauded Justice Bose’s remarkable journey, emphasizing his indelible imprint on the legal landscape through his distinguished tenure at the Supreme Court, the Calcutta High Court, and the Jharkhand High Court.

Describing Justice Bose as a true intellectual and a compassionate listener, CJI Chandrachud highlighted his multifaceted interests spanning literature, history, politics, linguistics, and theological philosophies. He noted Justice Bose’s exceptional trajectory from a prominent lawyer to a distinguished judge, underscoring his profound understanding of intellectual property law gained from his experience at an IP law firm before donning the judicial robe.

Acknowledging Justice Bose as a trailblazer in modernizing the judiciary and advocating for a technology-friendly legal system, CJI Chandrachud praised his adeptness in adjudicating diverse legal matters, ranging from complex commercial disputes to significant public law issues.

In his own remarks, Justice Bose reflected on the unity in thought among judges representing the diverse fabric of India, symbolizing the inherent oneness of the Indian ethos within the Supreme Court’s precincts.

Recalling Justice Bose’s pivotal role in pivotal decisions on matters of public interest during his tenure at the Supreme Court, CJI Chandrachud highlighted his contributions to significant rulings concerning data privacy law, the autonomy of the election commission, animal rights, and affirmative action.

Looking ahead, CJI Chandrachud expressed confidence in Justice Bose’s leadership as he assumes the directorship of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal, foreseeing his instrumental role in elevating the institution to greater heights.

In his farewell address, Justice Bose remarked on the evolving landscape of the legal profession in India, particularly the increasing participation of women, heralding the nation’s progression towards fostering an independent gender jurisprudence.

Born on April 11, 1959, Justice Bose embarked on his legal journey after completing his LLB from Surendranath Law College, Kolkata. His illustrious career saw him rise from the ranks of a practicing lawyer to a permanent judge at the Calcutta High Court, culminating in his appointment as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on August 11, 2018.
