Expressing disappointment over the allocation of the Bharuch seat to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as part of a seat-sharing pact with Congress, Mumtaz Patel, daughter of late veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel, stated her commitment to follow the “alliance dharma” for the larger interest of the nation.

In Gujarat, the Congress has decided to contest 24 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats, leaving Bharuch and Bhavnagar for the AAP.

Addressing the media, Mumtaz Patel conveyed her disappointment while acknowledging that sacrifices sometimes need to be made for the nation’s greater good. She expressed her willingness to adhere to the decision taken by the alliance committee, stating, “Whatever party instructs, I will follow Alliance Dharma.”

Highlighting the legacy of her father in Bharuch, Mumtaz Patel emphasized the emotional significance of the seat associated with Ahmed Patel for 45 years.

Responding to concerns about AAP potentially becoming a problem for Congress in the future, she asserted that in politics, relationships evolve, and only time will reveal the dynamics. Mumtaz Patel revealed that Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders were not in favor of allocating the Bharuch seat to AAP, reflecting the emotional attachment and aspirations associated with it.

Ahmed Patel had previously held the Bharuch seat, and Mumtaz Patel, along with her brother Faisal, had expressed interest in contesting from the stronghold of their father. Despite their aspirations, the party’s decision prioritized broader strategic considerations.

In response to the announcement, Chaitar Vasava, the AAP candidate for the Bharuch seat, expressed gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility. He acknowledged the significance of the alliance between AAP and Congress in Gujarat and pledged to fulfill his duties diligently.
