Jammu, 21st August. The National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have initiated discussions with the Congress’ central leadership regarding a potential alliance for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, Congress’ newly-appointed state unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra revealed on Monday.

Karra, who was recently appointed as the Congress chief for Jammu and Kashmir, stated that the NC has already approached the central leadership about forming an alliance. “To my knowledge, the National Conference has already approached the central leadership for an alliance,” Karra told reporters. He also mentioned that discussions with the PDP have occurred at some level.

Karra, who received a warm reception upon his arrival from New Delhi, emphasized the Congress’ commitment to forming alliances with like-minded parties. He indicated that internal consultations within the Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir unit are underway to assess potential partnerships.

The Congress is optimistic about working with regional parties that are part of the opposition INDIA bloc, believing that this cooperation will lead to success. “We are open to all like-minded parties that oppose the hegemony and dictatorial attitude of the BJP,” Karra said.

A five-member committee has been formed by the central leadership to explore the possibilities of alliances. The Congress’ focus will be on synchronizing efforts and leveraging the positive momentum generated by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra to address the economic, constitutional, religious, and regional issues affecting Jammu and Kashmir.

In a separate interview earlier in the day, Karra underscored the importance of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, criticizing the Centre for what he described as an “unconstitutional” move to downgrade the state to a Union Territory. He also dismissed the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led Democratic Progressive Azad Party, stating that it had been “outrightly rejected” by the electorate for its divergence from the Congress.

The three-phase elections to the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly are scheduled for September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results to be announced on October 4.
