New Delhi, 28th July. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Ukraine, which is expected to coincide with the war-torn country’s National Day (August 24), Congress Communications Chief Jairam Ramesh asked on Sunday whether the prime minister would visit ethnic conflict-torn Manipur state in the northeast before or after his trip to the European nation.

“The Chief Minister of Manipur attends the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi, presided over by the self-appointed non-biological Prime Minister. Then the Manipur chief minister attends a gathering of BJP chief ministers and deputy chief ministers presided over by the same god,” Ramesh wrote on X (previously Twitter), mocking the prime minister as a ‘deity.’

“The simple question that the people of Manipur are asking is this: Did Shri N. Biren Singh meet with Shri Narendra Modi separately one-on-one and discuss the situation in Manipur, which started burning on the night of May 3rd 2023? Did Shri N Biren Singh invite Shri Narendra Modi to visit Manipur, either before or after His trip to Ukraine,” he added.

The Congress has often chastised the Prime Minister for failing to visit the state while it is burning as a result of the strife between the Meitei and Kuki groups. The BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rules Manipur.

If the travel to Ukraine goes forward, it will be the prime minister’s first trip to the Volodymyr Zelensky-led country, which was attacked by Russia in February 2022. President Zelensky was among the world leaders who congratulated Prime Minister Modi on winning a third consecutive term in office in June.

The PM’s first bilateral visit in his third term was to Russia, which Zelensky termed as a ‘devastating setback to peace efforts.’

The West has chastised India for continuing to buy oil from Russia despite the Ukraine conflict. Furthermore, India has consistently abstained from voting on resolutions filed before the United Nations against Russia.
