New Delhi, 3rd April.
The Congress party has taken a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over comments made by its candidate, Jyoti Mirdha, from Rajasthan’s Nagaur constituency, suggesting a desire to amend the Constitution. This follows similar remarks made by BJP leader Anantkumar Hegde, according to the Congress.

In an undated video shared by senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, Jyoti Mirdha is purportedly heard discussing the need for the BJP to secure a majority in both houses of Parliament to make constitutional amendments. Tharoor criticized the BJP, suggesting that after Hegde’s remarks on constitutional changes, the party quickly distanced itself from him, but now another candidate has openly expressed similar sentiments.

Reacting to Tharoor’s post, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh labeled the situation as an “orchestrated strategy” by the BJP. Congress MP M.K. Raghavan also shared the video, reiterating the concerns raised by Tharoor.

In the video, Jyoti Mirdha is heard emphasizing the necessity for constitutional amendments to make tough decisions in the interest of the nation. She mentions the need for majority support in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for such amendments.

Responding to criticism, Jyoti Mirdha stated that if constitutional amendments are required for the betterment of the nation and its citizens, the BJP is willing to pursue them. She cited past amendments, including the recent Women’s Reservation Bill, as examples of the party’s commitment to constitutional evolution.

Mirdha clarified that her remarks were misinterpreted and blown out of proportion by opposition leaders, emphasizing that the Constitution is a living document that has undergone numerous amendments since its inception.

The Congress, however, seized on Mirdha’s statements, alleging that they reflect a disdain for the Constitution and democracy by the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They accused the BJP of attempting to undermine the rights of the people by proposing changes to the Constitution.
