Ahmedabad, 20th Oct. The Congress party will hold an important meeting in Gujarat on Friday, which will be chaired by Rahul Gandhi. The meeting comes ahead of the appointment of a new state president and the recent defeat in the urban local body elections.

Important leaders of the state including the President, Working President and other office bearers of the party will attend the meeting. Sources said that this will be a feedback session to take stock of the state organization which has failed to defeat the BJP in the state. Recently appointed state in-charge Raghu Sharma has the daunting task of taking veterans and young leaders along to strengthen the party organisation.

Congress is also considering the faces for the new state president. Former Union ministers Bharat Singh Solanki and Arjun Modvadia are being considered for the top post of the party, while the youngest Hardik Patel is said to be in the final stages, as he is already the working president. However, Modvadia, who is the chairman of the campaign committee, could be the top choice as he is from Porbandar.

The Congress experiment with Paresh Dhanani and Amit Chavda did not yield results and several MLAs have left the party since the 2017 elections.

State in-charge Raghu Sharma had said, “My priority is to strengthen the Congress party in Gujarat, strengthen its structure, organize training programs and there are other issues in the state which need to be addressed.”

Congress is also facing a challenge from the AAP and AIMIM in Gujarat and Congress leaders admit that one of the reasons for the defeat in the civic polls is these parties which are cutting into Congress votes.

In the recent Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP won 41 ward seats out of a total of 44 seats, capturing the seats of arch-rival Congress. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) debuted in the political arena with one seat here, with two seats claimed by the Congress.
