President Droupadi Murmu attended the 13th Graduation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Tuesday.

In her address, President Murmu lauded NISER’s significant progress within a short period, noting its harmonious blend of scientific rationality and traditional values.

She emphasized the importance of using education and knowledge for the betterment of humanity, urging students to achieve excellence in their fields while fulfilling their social responsibilities with accountability.

Reflecting on Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of “merciless science,” President Murmu stressed that science devoid of sensitivity towards humanity is a grave sin. She encouraged students to maintain humility and a spirit of inquiry, viewing their knowledge as a social enterprise dedicated to societal and national development.

President Murmu also highlighted the dual nature of scientific advancements, such as CRISPR-Cas9 and Generative Artificial Intelligence, which bring both immense potential and significant ethical challenges.

She acknowledged the time-consuming nature of fundamental science research and urged students to remain patient and resilient in the face of setbacks, reminding them that breakthroughs often emerge from perseverance.

The President concluded by inspiring graduates to pursue their research with dedication, as advancements in fundamental science frequently yield substantial benefits across various fields.
