Mumbai, 23rd Oct. Bishan Singh Bedi, former India captain and the country’s finest ever left-arm spinner, died on Monday after a long illness. He was 77 years old, and is survived by his wife Anju Bedi, son Angad Bedi and daughter Neha Bedi.

Bedi, who was born in Amritsar in 1946, played 67 Tests for India, taking 266 wickets with 14 five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul.

He was one of the golden quartet of spinners in Indian cricket, together with Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chadrasekhar, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, who formed the basis of India’s bowling unit for more than a decade between 1966 and 1978.

Bedi briefly managed the Indian cricket team on visits to New Zealand and England in 1990.

He was also a national selector and mentor to many talented spinners, including Maninder Singh and Murali Kartik, who all praised his technical acumen.
