New Delhi, 29th Feb.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday accused Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena of exerting pressure on officials to obstruct various initiatives of the city government, including the bus marshal scheme.

The LG’s office did not immediately respond to the chief minister’s allegations.

Addressing the Delhi Assembly regarding the removal of civil defence volunteers serving as bus marshals in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses, Kejriwal highlighted the successful implementation of the scheme from 2015 to 2022. He said that ensuring women’s safety was a priority for the government, citing the installation of CCTV cameras, street lights at dark spots, and the deployment of bus marshals equipped with panic buttons.

Kejriwal expressed dismay that objections were raised by officers in 2023, questioning the eligibility of civil defence volunteers to serve as marshals. Alleging interference from the Lt Governor, Kejriwal claimed that pressure was exerted on officers to halt the bus marshal scheme, citing redundancy due to the presence of CCTV cameras and panic buttons.

Furthermore, Kejriwal accused the BJP of insincere concern over the issue, labeling their response as “crocodile tears.” He affirmed his willingness to cooperate by signing any necessary documents for the reinstatement of bus marshals.

Kejriwal also referenced Saxena’s recent open letter regarding the one-time settlement scheme for allegedly inflated water bills, criticizing the “filthy” language used in the communication and stressing the need for more respectful discourse.
