New Delhi, 19th Feb.
A Delhi court on Saturday dismissed the bail plea of activist Sharjeel Imam in a sedition and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case.

Sharjeel, who had sought bail citing his four-year detention out of a possible seven-year maximum sentence, was denied relief by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai. The judge cited the unique nature of the allegations against Sharjeel and his involvement in activities leading to riots as grounds for rejection.

Imam was arrested on January 28, 2020, for allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches at Delhi’s Jamia area and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

This marks the second time his bail plea has been dismissed by the trial court.

The court remarked, “Considering the allegations against the applicant and his disruptive activities, the court deems it appropriate not to consider the relief as prayed for and to continue his custody.”

In 2022, charges were framed against Imam under Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity), 153B (imputations prejudicial to national integration), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of IPC, and Section 13 (Punishment for Unlawful Activities) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
