Delhi HC Restrains Ramdev from Claiming ‘Coronil’ as COVID-19 Cure

New Delhi, 29th July. The Delhi High Court has issued an interim order prohibiting yoga guru Ramdev from claiming that “Coronil” is a cure for COVID-19. The court directed him to remove such claims from all websites and social media platforms within three days.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, addressing a lawsuit filed by doctors’ associations, highlighted that “Coronil” was approved only as a “supporting measure” and not as a treatment for COVID-19. The court emphasized that misleading claims could risk public health and tarnish Ayurveda’s reputation.

The lawsuit, initiated in 2021, alleged that Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurveda falsely promoted “Coronil” as a COVID-19 cure, violating regulatory approvals. The court stressed that such claims are contrary to the product’s licensed status as an “immuno-booster.”

The court noted the urgency of the matter given the global health crisis and the potential risk to public health. It ordered the defendants to remove all misleading content and cease further dissemination of such claims until the suit’s final disposal.

The court also pointed out that branding and labeling suggesting “Coronil” could “nullify the coronavirus” might constitute mis-labeling under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, leaving further examination to authorities.

Ramdev’s counsel argued that “Coronil” was in line with Ayurvedic principles and had received appropriate licenses. However, the court found ongoing misrepresentations despite previous warnings from the Ministry of AYUSH and assurances to the Supreme Court.

The court concluded that such misleading advertisements pose a public nuisance and are legally impermissible.
